Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten?

Starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone, and it’s important to ensure your child is ready to thrive in this new chapter. At Caprock Academy, children must turn 5 years old on or before August 31st to enroll in kindergarten. Here are some key indicators to help you determine if your child is ready:

Social and Emotional Readiness

• Shares and Takes Turns: Your child can engage with peers by sharing toys or taking turns during activities.
• Listens and Follows Directions: They can respond to simple instructions like “put away your books” or “line up quietly.”
• Sits Quietly for Short Periods: Your child can stay focused during story time or while completing an activity.

Independence

• Potty-Trained: Your child is fully potty-trained and can manage basic restroom needs independently.
• Self-Care Skills: They can handle small tasks like washing hands, putting on a jacket, or organizing their belongings.

Academic Readiness

• Interest in Learning: Your child shows curiosity and enjoys exploring books, shapes, numbers, or letters.

Fine Motor Skills

These are essential for tasks like writing, cutting, and art projects. Examples include:

• Holding and using crayons, pencils, or markers.
• Cutting simple shapes with child-safe scissors.
• Stringing beads or manipulating small objects like building blocks.

Hand-Eye Coordination

• Catching and throwing a ball.
• Completing puzzles or threading a shoelace.
• Stacking blocks or placing items in specific patterns.

Listening and Following Directions

• Your child should be able to follow two-step directions, such as “pick up your book and place it on the shelf.”

Preparing for Kindergarten

If your child is still developing these skills, don’t worry! Read books together, play games that require taking turns, or engage in activities like drawing or building to strengthen fine motor skills.

Step One: Intent to Enroll

• Submitting the Intent to Enroll Form will be the first step in securing a spot for your child at Caprock Academy.
• Enrollment for the upcoming school year begins the first Monday in January.  
• Families must complete the form electronically through our website. *Paper forms will not be accepted.
• Kindergarten Intent to Enroll Forms must be received on or before the last Thursday in January.

Step Two: Kindergarten Lottery

• The Kindergarten Lottery will be held on the first Tuesday in February.
• Any additional Kindergarten Intent to Enroll forms received will be placed on the Kindergarten lottery list.
• A new lottery will be run as seats become available. 

Step Three: Offering & Accepting a Position

• The school Registrar will begin calling the families to offer Kindergarten positions beginning on the first Wednesday in February. 
• If a position has been offered to your student, you have two business days to accept the position via telephone at 970-243-1771, ext. 1132. You may leave a message for the registrar after regular office hours.
• Once you have accepted a position, you will have 3 business days to schedule an in-person meeting with the Registrar to turn in your child’s completed Enrollment Packet.  ​Failure to make an appointment within three business days will be deemed as choosing to decline the position and the student will be removed from the class.

Step Four: Admission Meeting

• After a position has been offered and accepted, families will need to complete our Enrollment Packet, which includes all the necessary forms and information to finalize the enrollment process.
• Complete all pages and gather all required original documents that are listed on page 1.
• Attend your scheduled meeting with the Registrar.

Step Two: Enrollment Lottery

If the number of Intent to Enroll forms exceed the number of available seats by the Intent to Enroll deadline, a lottery will be used to determine the placement of students for any grade level for which the Intent to Enroll forms exceed capacity. The enrollment lottery will be held in public at the school on the date set forth in the Enrollment Timeline.

1st-6th Grade

• The 1st through 6th Grade Lottery will be held on the first Monday in June.
• Any additional Intent to Enroll forms received will be placed on the lottery list.
• A new lottery will be run as seats become available. 

7th-11th Grade

• The 7th through 11th Grade Lottery will be held on the second Monday in June.
• Any additional Intent to Enroll forms received will be placed on the lottery list.
• A new lottery will be run as seats become available. 

12th Grade

• Caprock only accepts incoming 12th grade on a case-by-case situation approved by the Head of School based on student's transcripts

Step Three: Offering & Accepting a Position

• All students who are of eligible age and have timely submitted an Intent to Enroll will be entered into the lottery. On the day of the lottery, students are assigned random numbers. A random number generator is used to select students to ensure equality.
• The school Registrar will contact families to offer positions on the same day as the lottery. 
• Upon notification of admittance, families will have two business days to accept the position.

Step Four: Admission Meeting

• Once a student is offered a position and the parent/guardian accepts the position, the parent/guardian must complete and turn in a full enrollment packet before the student will be able to attend class.
• Parents/Guardians will have 3 business days to set up an appointment with the Registrar to turn in the full enrollment packet.
• Failure to set up an appointment within three business days will be deemed as choosing to decline the position and the student will be removed from the class.
