Subject: Two initiatives for High School students
Dear High School Parents and Guardians:
The Colorado State Board of Education wants to help students create goals toward their future. The state of Colorado has a requirement for all High school students to have an Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) along with an account through the College in Colorado website. Caprock Academy is implementing these initiatives during the months of February and March. Parents and families play an important role in helping children plan for and reach their postsecondary goals.
The Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) is an individualized plan that is developed by students and their parents or guardians, in collaboration with school educators. The ICAP starts high school students thinking about what they would like to pursue as a career or job and how to get to that point through high school and beyond graduation. The ICAP is a questionnaire students complete to set goals and create the steps toward those goals. This plan is a working document that will be updated periodically, adding items your student may do as he/she moves through high school. The ICAP plan sets up benchmarks for freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years and asks:
What kind of education do you need to accomplish your career goal?
What course planning, college research and visits, or workshops have you done?
What are your interests beyond high school and what interest surveys have you taken?
What experiences inside and outside of school do you have that would help toward your goal?
What applications toward jobs, military, or college have you done?
What financial aid help have you researched?
Students will establish their log-in information on the College in Colorado website. With this site, students will have access to online tools and resources and helps complete the ICAP plan. College in Colorado website was created by the state of Colorado to help students research, apply to, attend and pay for education and training after high school graduation. The College in Colorado account does require that the student have an email to start. Parents can also set up their own access to the system. We strongly encourage you, as parents, to be part of this process with your student(s). Visit www.collegeincolorado.org for more information.
These tools will help start conversations and planning with your child about their life after graduation.
