Reading at Caprock Academy
Why Reading Matters
At Caprock Academy, we believe that reading is the foundation of lifelong learning. Regular reading builds strong vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, and develops critical thinking skills. Beyond academics, reading fosters imagination, curiosity, and a love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom.
Research consistently shows that students who read regularly:
-
Perform better across all subject areas
-
Develop stronger writing and communication skills
-
Gain confidence in problem-solving and critical analysis
-
Cultivate empathy and understanding of the world around them
How Reading Aligns with Our Curriculum
As a classical school, our curriculum is carefully designed to guide students through the Trivium — the Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric stages of learning. Reading is essential in each stage:
-
Grammar Stage (K–6): Students build a foundation of knowledge and vocabulary through rich literature, phonics, and decoding skills. Regular reading at home and school reinforces fluency and comprehension.
-
Logic Stage (7–8): Students begin to analyze and question what they read, developing reasoning and critical thinking skills. Reading across genres helps them connect ideas and form sound arguments.
-
Rhetoric Stage (9–12): Students learn to express themselves clearly and persuasively, drawing from the deep well of classic literature and primary sources. Reading prepares them to communicate with clarity, confidence, and conviction.
Our Commitment to Families
We encourage every student to read regularly both in and out of school. From our classroom reading challenges to our school-wide literacy initiatives, we partner with families to create a culture where reading is not just an assignment, but a joy.
At Caprock Academy, we don’t view reading as one subject among many — it is the heartbeat of our education, shaping thoughtful, articulate, and lifelong learners.
Why Read 20 Minutes a Day?
At Caprock Academy, we encourage families to make daily reading a habit. Just 20 minutes a day has a profound impact on a child’s vocabulary, comprehension, and long-term academic success.
The Difference Reading Makes
-
20 minutes per day: About 1.8 million words per year — students score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests.
-
5 minutes per day: About 282,000 words per year — students score in the 50th percentile.
-
1 minute per day: About 8,000 words per year — students score in the 10th percentile.
By the end of 6th grade, students who read 20 minutes each night will have gained the equivalent of 60 full school days of reading practice.
Building Lifelong Learners
Reading is one of the simplest and most effective ways parents can support their child’s education. Daily reading helps students:
-
Strengthen comprehension and critical thinking skills
-
