The Colorado READ Act at Caprock Academy

The Colorado Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act, passed by the Colorado legislature in 2012, focuses on early literacy development for students in kindergarten through third grade. This initiative ensures all students, particularly those at risk of not reading at grade level by the end of third grade, receive the support they need to succeed.

How Does the READ Act Work?

The READ Act emphasizes:

  • Regular Reading Assessments: Students’ reading skills are evaluated to identify their proficiency level.
  • Individualized Support Plans: Students not reading at grade level are provided with personalized READ Plans, which outline specific strategies and interventions tailored to help them improve.

Caprock Academy’s Role in Supporting the READ Act

At Caprock Academy, we are dedicated to fostering strong literacy foundations for our students. The principles of the READ Act align seamlessly with our classical education model and our commitment to excellence.

  • Data-Driven Approach: We regularly assess students to monitor progress and identify areas of need.
  • Individualized Support: Our educators work with families to develop READ Plans tailored to each student’s unique learning needs.
  • Integrated Literacy Development: Early literacy skills are built into our curriculum, ensuring students have the tools to succeed academically.

Why Literacy Matters

Reading is the cornerstone of academic success and lifelong learning. By prioritizing literacy development, we equip our students with the confidence and skills they need to excel in their education and beyond.

Why Read 20 Minutes a Day?

At Caprock Academy, we encourage families to make daily reading a habit. Just 20 minutes a day has a profound impact on a child’s vocabulary, comprehension, and long-term academic success.

The Difference Reading Makes

  • 20 minutes per day: About 1.8 million words per year — students score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests.

  • 5 minutes per day: About 282,000 words per year — students score in the 50th percentile.

  • 1 minute per day: About 8,000 words per year — students score in the 10th percentile.

By the end of 6th grade, students who read 20 minutes each night will have gained the equivalent of 60 full school days of reading practice.

Building Lifelong Learners

Reading is one of the simplest and most effective ways parents can support their child’s education. Daily reading helps students:

  • Strengthen comprehension and critical thinking skills

  • Build stronger vocabulary and writing abilities

  • Develop a lifelong love for learning
