Families are an integral, essential part of Caprock Academy. Caprock is heavily dependent upon parents and their children working with the teachers and administrators to achieve academic excellence and character development.
Caprock Academy was founded by a group of families who sought to create a classical education option in the Grand Valley. The tradition and necessity of family involvement continues. Parents act as Board of Director members, classroom volunteers, committee members, maintenance personnel, Goal Hour teachers, CAST volunteers, field trip chaperones…just to name a few. Children, of course, form our student body, but also comprise and lead our National Honor Society membership, compete in academic and sporting competitions, and daily invigorate their teachers with their zest for learning. Caprock Academy would be incomplete without its families.

Supporting the curriculum. At a minimum, parents will read with their children and provide an atmosphere conducive to completing homework. Homework directly supports the students’ academic progress and parental supervision and support is vital. Parents are encouraged to visit RenWeb [link] frequently to remain apprised of their children’s grades, assignments and lessons.

Visiting our classrooms. Aside from the first two weeks of the school year and a few weeks during standardized testing (CSAP, NWEA), parents are always welcome in our classroom, either to simply observe or, with prior coordination, assist the teachers with their instruction.

Volunteering. [Link] Parent volunteers perform a variety of tasks, from clerical tasks to teaching Goal Hour classes. Students, too, spend volunteer hours maintaining and improving their school. The Caprock Academy Support Team (CAST)[Link] organizes parent volunteer efforts.

Having their children prepared for school and on time. Parents are asked to drop off their well-rested, well-fed children on time, in dress code and with a lunch.

Knowing and abiding by Caprock policies and procedures. Caprock has higher expectations than many schools and parental support and compliance is vital. For example, our dress code is designed to minimize distractions; students out of dress code become a distraction and waste instructional time. Tardies and unexcused absences disrupt academic progress; ultimately, the parent is responsible for transporting the student to school. The Family Handbook [link] contains all of Caprock’s policies.

Constructively helping improve Caprock. Parents and students should bring problems, suggestions or areas for improvement to the attention of the appropriate official—typically the homeroom teacher, but occasionally an administrator or the Board of Directors. One should note that the time to suggest a change in policy is before disregarding or violating that policy!

By communicating with your child’s teacher. Caprock schedules two formal conferences each year to foster direct communication between the teacher, parent and student. Additional conferences are always welcome—just contact your child’s teacher and setup an appointment. Aside from a momentary exchange, parents and teachers should refrain from “conferencing” during afternoon pickup in order to keep traffic flowing freely. Aside from the formal conferences, emails and phone calls help the parent and teacher collaborate on their student’s progress.
